Jesse Edge has put pen to paper, signing a contract until the end of the season with Dutch Eerste Divisie club Achilles’29.
The dynamic midfielder played the first half of the season at FC Pisek, which plays in the Czech league Česká fotbalová liga. Edge was previously under contract with Auckland City and Italian club Vicenza, where he was the first New Zealand player to sign a professional contract in Italy. Although he has not yet debut for the men’s national team, he has played well in both the NZ U17 and U20 teams, taking part in the U20 World Cup in 2015.
Achilles’29 fielded three debutants in their match against NAC last night, of the three debutants Edge made the biggest impression. The former Western Suburbs FC midfielder was clearly present, both physically and verbally.
“That’s the way I play. I try to keep everyone together. We’ve done everything to NAC. It was 1-0 for a while and so we had a chance. It’s disappointing we lost, but I’m really glad I’m here. It’s all gone so fast, I’ve been here just over a week.” Edge said.
Twelve points must be bridged in order for Achilles’29 to avoid relegation this season.
“There are stranger things that happen in football. Leicester City won the Premier League last season. We have to fight together and die together. We have trained well this week and go to next week, do it again. There are still plenty of games. We must ensure we keep a positive attitude in the team. There are four new players, it still brought something positive, you can see that already.”
