Another great football weekend in the books, the season is underway for almost everyone now and the weekend was jam-packed for Western Suburbs teams!
The Men’s Reserve Team played Kapiti Coast United away. West’s were put in a tough position, conceding a goal early in the first half. They stepped up and managed to get in an equalizer late in the second half. Unfortunately that wasn’t enough, and Kapiti put a penalty in the net, making the final score 2-1.
At same time as the Reserves, the Women’s First team were in action in the Kelly Cup Final against Waterside Karori. The first half Wests played with the wind in their face, both literally and metaphorically. The girls conceded in the middle of the first half, and the play they are capable of just wasn’t coming through.
Down 1-0 at half-time, the girls came out a little rearranged and ready to play the football they can really play. Unfortunately, Karori were awarded with a free kick at the top of the box, which they finished to make it 2-0. The tables turned for Suburbs when Wardlaw was pushed in the box and Schiltgen made no mistake from the penalty spot: 2-1. The very next attack was a team effort, resulting in a ball bouncing by Lavery’s feet which she put in to make 2-2. There was a big momentum shift, and the girls were feeling it out there. Some great team pressure up high resulted in an own goal, and the Kelly Cup winning result of 3-2 for the girls! It’s always a good day when you get to break in new polos with gold medals around the neck!
The Men’s First Team played a wet and physical match against Lower Hutt City AFC in the Central League. The conditions invited plenty of spectacular sliding, but luckily the spectators got to enjoy that from the warmth of Fraser Parks new facility!
The boys managed to net two in the first half. One an own goal after an attempted clearance of Sabo’s cross. The other coming through a beautiful penalty spot finish by Garbett after Ingham was fouled in the box. No change in score in the second half, despite some great chances and good spells of play. An awesome result for the team, and a nice follow up after last week’s win.
All three of Western Suburbs’ U-17 teams came away with good wins on Sunday morning too. Nice one boys!
