TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH LOOMS IN CENTRAL LEAGUE

The winner of the Central League may well be determined this weekend when top two Western Suburbs and Wairarapa United square off at Endeavour Park on Sunday.

Wairarapa United are on a run, and haven’t lost since April. In their last four matches they’ve scored a whopping 17 goals and added Swedish striker Ermal Hajdari to their squad. Their goal scoring line up is the most fearsome in the league on paper.

Wairarapa won the last time these two met, 2-1 in round three, but that was way back in mid-April and it was the last time Western Suburbs lost a game.

While Wests snappy midfield play is their hallmark, it’s their miserly defence that might win them the competition. Only eleven goals conceded – the best in the league by a long margin.

Wests coach Declan Edge said he sees Wairarapa as dangerous, with lots of attacking options.

“They play a cavalier attacking style and they’re a real threat. But they say the best defence always wins Superbowl.”

Edge wouldn’t be drawn on how important individuals were but said this season’s Wests performance was “the culmination of a four year process, of giving these young Kiwi players opportunities.”
