Wests continue to dominate Central League

Western Suburbs continue to lay waste to all comers in the Central League, making short work of Wellington United at Newtown Park with a comfortable 2-0 win on Saturday.

That result, coupled with Wairarapa United’s 3-1 win over Napier City Rovers on Sunday, meant Wests’ lead over Wairarapa remained at four points with four games to go.

Wests dominated proceedings from start to finish and, except for a brief period just after halftime, United struggled to stay in Wests half for any length of time.

Wests opened the scoring after 20 minutes when United lost possession attempting to play out from the back, the ball falling to left back Dalton Wilkins who calmly placed the ball between the legs of Keegan Smith in the United goal.

Smith wasn’t to be blamed though, and had a strong performance in goal for United, making some excellent saves that stopped the scoreline better reflecting the match.

Xavier Green completed the scoring for Wests with a goal of the highest quality, bending it into the top corner from outside the box and over the top of Smith. It was something special in a game that otherwise wasn’t a great spectacle.

Owen Parker-Price tried to one up Green late in the second half with an audacious attempt to chip Smith from 25 yards. His dinked effort landing on top of the roof of the net, and 2-0 was how it finished.
